I think the problem lies primarily in the case where someone is already employed, and the other workers vote to start a union. Then, it does seem to undermine personal freedom to have to join the union, at least at first. I think if someone wants to give up their worker's rights, that should be fine, as long as there's no way to exploit that choice to the detriment of others.

I think that Thom was being a little disingenuous, and that he completely missed an opportunity to really make a cogent case for importance of unions. Obviously Mark wasn't saying that workers shouldn't have the right to organize, just that if you are in the work place, you shouldn't be forced to join a union. It was especially weak sauce for him to say that the person could go work somewhere else if they didn't want to do it. Employment is not a commodity, especially these days.

Majority rule shouldn't always be the governing principal in politics. Rather, the governing principal should be a balance between the degree to which the policy contributes to the common good, and the welfare of the individual. Take Global Warming for example. The experts on environmental science, undoubtedly a minority in terms of the electorate, argue that the climate is warming due to human influence. Obviously, their opinion is much more important than the rest of ours.

At any rate, Thom could have taken the higher ground and acknowledged that while it does, at first glance, seem to undermine personal freedom to have to join a union in order to work somewhere, its benefit to the common good outweighs the benefit of being able to choose whether to avoid a union. If a person can opt out of joining a union, then there are plenty of ways for the employer to exploit that ability, which would essentially compromise the right to unionize in the first place. For example, the employer could offer benefits for not joining the union. That might then lead to weakening the worker's rights, which would end up lowering the quality of life for all workers, including the one who opted not to join the union.

I see no reason to fold my arms and feel smug about an argument where my side's main strategy is to bully and distort words.

I would support Mr. Romney as a means to an end, i.e., I'd support almost ANY person that could bounce the current Socialist/Marxist/Communist out of office before this country is in such a sad state that it cannot not recover.

Joan was a frequent guest on my first talk show job... over nights on 1480 WSAR / Fall River, Mass.... long, long time ago. Didn't know about Larry's book but did see the giant mural of him in his home town (Philly) when we lived there... have a copy of Joe Besser's book. Not a big Besser fan.

Always appreciate hearing from a fellow Stooges fan!

You mentioned the Three Stooges on KSFO recently. You are probably familiar with the various books on/by the Stooges (Moe's book, "Curley" and others by Joan Howard Maurer). In case you missed it, an excellent book "One Fine Stooge" on Larry came out in 2006 - slick pages, color photos, etc.. Also, a quarterly Journal has 140 issues to date from the "Three Stooges Fan Club" at P.O. Box 747, Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania 19437 - $ 9 1 year, $ 16 for 2 years and $ 23 for three years. Also, a book by Joe Besser, "Not Just A Stooge." Figured you know about these but perhaps people visiting your site may not. Thank you.

The positions advocated in the above piece are in fact ENTIRELY UnAmerican! That's the whole point of the warning it telegraphs. Even with that spelled out at the end as clearly as a 2x4 upside your head and you STILL can't understand what you just read? Sorry I used big words and assumed the reader's ability to think. My bad and once again I have proven another of my frequent points... that the ignorance and lack of critical thinking skills among us indicate that it's all over already and all that is left is to toss a shovel full of dirt into the grave where we have dumped Lady Liberty's body.

I thought I had read and understood the founding documents of the United States of America. I thought that I had some little understanding of The Spirit and The Intent of the so called Founding Fathers from reading much available of their published public writings, personal journals, anecdotal reports about them from their contemporaries, friends, associates, enemies.

After reading this blog of yours, I am questioning your spirit and your intent! Do you really display loyalty to those documents? Do you demonstrate understanding of the application of those principles? I must read more to truly understand, to resolve the apparent dichotomy between what you profess to follow and that which you advocate. Perhaps I have missed some important foundation for your construction of a systematic deprivation of the protections of those founding principles.

I must strive to overcome my initial impulse to label such expressed beliefs as Un-American! The failure to see clearly the basis for your position can only be mine, caqn it not? Surely, you are not speaking out against The Spirit and The Intent of our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution of the United States.

Mark,
I'm not satisfied with any of the possible candidates running under the GOP flag. I certainly know that this country cannot continue under Obama. Would love to see a Colonel Allen West drafted to run. Now that's excitement considering his leadership in Iraq.

Katherine - listening in Santa Rosa on KSFO

A Tea Party Patriot - lets get rumbling!

Dear Mr. Williams...........

If we are to beat Obama and fix America we MUST have an AGENDA. The country must have some understanding of EXACTLY what the Tea Party whats to accomplish.

                       "THE TEA PARTY TEN".........

               1. Term limits for Congress (4 yrs. + 4 if reelected)
               2. No retirement except for contributions to 401K
               3. Balanced budget amendment
               4. Repeal Obama Care
               5. Graduated flat Fed tax
               6. All pay Social Security on 100% of income
               7. Reduce foreign military bases to (50) man posts
               8. Stop exportation of oil by the U.S.
               9. ......these are examples of what the people
             10. should know the Tea Party WANTS TO CHANGE.

                           AMERICA IS BROKEN..........

STOP MAKING NOISE AND START TELLING THE PEOPLE....
EXACTLY WHAT THE TEA PARTY WANTS TO FIX.

Mark are there any plans for the Tea Party to create not just a ltimus test but an agenda? I say the Tea Party should create a domestic program that sets out exactly what it wants to do. I think is there is basic consensus; Repeal Obamacare with no Big Government Replacement; Shut down the Department of Educaton, No Cap and Trade Laws, No Taxpayer Incentives for Illegals; people could make suggestions from all over the country, Replace the Tax Code; a committee writes up the platform, the Tea Party has about 5 days to review it and then it is put to each candidate they are asked to throw out their personal platform and sign on to the new one; they can refuse but it would be made public. Then a pledged candidate would have to follow the platform very strictly on the domestic side or be primaried. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has come up with this idea but quite frankly I'm sick of the candidates giving us their ideas; I'd like it to be other way around. IMO this would be a step to wipe out progressivism; Gingrich would simply not be allowed to spend money on green research, Perry likewise on in state tuition, they would defy our will only with great political consequences. Show 'em whose boss because I guarentee if the RINOs get in we are screwed; this could even discourage RINOs from running.

Dear Mr. Williams,

I am writing on behalf of Russia Today TV - 24/7 English language news
station in Moscow broadcasting internationally.
My name is Inessa, I am a producer of a panel discussion program called
CrossTalk.

We would like to invite you to our program.

We're recording it on Thursday, November 17, at 10 am EST, it lasts around 30 minutes.

Below is the topic of our discussion:
GOP race for White House and foreign policy: Front-runners for the Republican presidential nomination have made it clear they all (almost all) are foreign policy hawks – rough on China, tough on Iran, and very pro-Israel, etc. How much is this a function of the party’s traditional foreign positions or Obama’s foreign policy track record to date? (Maybe a combination of both?) How well informed are the GOP candidates regarding American foreign policy and global events? And does Obama have anything to worry about when it comes foreign policy in his re-election bid?

We'll be delighted if you could join our discussion.
FYI: Our guests are well-known journalists and high-ranking officials from
all over the world.
Among them:
Richard Burt, U.S. Ambassador to Germany; a chief negotiator of the
Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty
Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum
Lord Robert Skidelsky, British Parliament (Warwick University)
John Naisbitt, Naisbitt China Institute
David Ignatius, American journalist and novelist
Thomas Graham, Kissinger Associates
Anatol Lieven, King's College London
Gareth Evans, former Australian Foreign Minister (1983 – 1996)
Princeton N. Lyman, former U.S. ambassador to South Africa and Nigeria
and former Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization
Affairs
Parag Khanna, Director of the Global Governance Initiative at the New
America Foundation
Stephen Zunes, University of San Francisco
Anas Altikriti, President and founder of the Cordoba Foundation

I agree with everything you've posted, Mark. If you live for free on my dime, you should be held accountable for it, by your own hand. The cost and time associated with this should be passed to the recipients. The only other things to address would be the elderly and the medically disabled. These people should be given special attention, because if wisdom equals knowledge plus experience, after 65 years of life one could amass a vast amount of wisdom. Many of these people have learned and accomplished great things that too often die with them as they die alone. These people too often are pushed to the side for a variety of reasons. The medically disabled, whether through military service or through honest and medically proven conditions, not obesity or careless acts, but true disability should also be tended to differently. These folks should be given the opportunity to not only rehabilitate if possible, but work as a form of therapy, instead of being shuffled away into the back room and medicated into submission.

Mark,
I loved your commentary... God Bless you and Holly! This is what our country is made of! LEGAL immigrants... working hard, buying a modest home, to have several generations of family live in. Contributing to our society. And they are genuinely welcoming you and Holly into their family celebration. I have experienced the Mexican love and hospitality... there isn't a people more generous in spirit!

PS... The food is ALWAYS great, no matter how humble.

Wow, you guys in Rhody are way far behind the curve... and you are actually letting the USAG tell your governor what to do? State run shops, like NH or PA liquor stores?

Wrong. Really????

Here in Cali we told the Feds to go play with themselves and now these places are private sector and sprout like grass (pun intended) and provide thousands of well-paying jobs! There are nearly 40 of them here in Sacramento alone ... a dinky town of just over 400,000 people.... regionally there have got to be a hundred, throw in the dozens in the Bay Area and you can literally fill a Yellow Pages. (http://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/420-guide/content?oid=1957035)

They pay millions of dollars every year in sales, property and business taxes; and employees pay millions in income taxes.

Average per ounce price is under $400, coupons and two-for-ones and increasing competition are putting a great deal of downward pressure on the prices to the point where established concerns actually lobby against full legalization!

Tell Chafee to grow a set

Joshua, you miss the entire point, which is that he who feeds, clothes and shelters you also controls your life and personal decisions. This article is a warning, not a proposal. That you would take seriously the absurd idea of government approval for a citizen's diet under the guise of doing it for their own good, with or without their agreement only adds weight to my point that giving such power over one to another is a critical step toward slavery.
