Mark Williams on Glenn Beck

Apparently I somehow wound up part of conversation on today’s Glenn Beck show. We missed it and our DVR was otherwise engaged, but several people emailed me to express concern over whatever was said.
Glenn Beck is perhaps the greatest satirist of our time, so less overt and more subtle than for example Jon Stewart. It is so subtle in fact that Glenn’s punchline is only apparent when you take a step back and see the influence of the likes of Wally George and Glenn’s own shock jock act.

The big difference is that the late George and the early Beck let their audience in on the joke. For today’s Glenn Beck the joke is on those who take him seriously as anything more than a wonderful entertainer.
I am a huge fan, love his work, think highly of him personally and appreciate his humor but also keep him in that perspective. To paraphrase something that Jerry Springer said to me following a 1996 or ‘97 episode of his show on which I was a ringer guest… at the end of the hour it is simply a brilliantly executed, satirical and entertaining rant on our times. Glenn’s show is Jerry’s only with the guests keeping their shirts on and capitalizing on issues much more serious than who flunked what paternity test.
Maybe more to say later, maybe not.
Update, Saturday morning
Still haven’t seen the video or spoken with Amy (Kremer – who was also a direct victim of Glenn’s humor last night) or Glenn (probably won’t, got a busy weekend and traveling next week) but several more of you have told me that Beck and his writing staff made up some outrageous and racist quotes, combined them with bits and pieces of things that I have indeed said over the years and created entirely new and over the top, insanely racist ideas that he then attributed to me. It also seems like Amy fell victim to an invitation to participate in a “discussion” that was in fact a ruse to add a depth of credibility to the joke. The joke doesn’t work with just Glenn and Jenny Beth Martin, both of whom were in on the gag.

For the record; I would not have accepted an invitation to appear on the show (if offered) unless I was in Jenny Beth’s position of playing Larry to Glenn’s Moe. And nobody from Glenn’s show – or from any show on Fox other than Geraldo’s for that matter – have contacted me to ask about the accuracy of any of their reporting on the things that I have said or done, either before during or after any of their shows. Neither did Glenn or his people give me a heads up that I would be the punchline of their nightly humor. They did what the other media have been doing, which is to keep repeating the same falsehoods over and over again with the story becoming more and more outrageous with each telling. The only difference here being that Beck’s show did not act out of being lazy but (if what you are telling me is accurate) rather they truly did manufacture material on purpose and place it into my mouth.
This story has reached such silly proportions that at one point Arianna Huffington actually published that I was a leader of entire apartment communities’ “witchcraft” ceremonies’ featuring “clouds of pot smoke” around.
In Awe of Shock
As Glenn will be the first to tell you he is a shock jock. He and I came out of the same Tampa Shock Jock school at Jacor Radio (now part of Clear Channel). My class alumnus include Lionel, Mark Larsen (not the one in San Diego – this one in Tampa) who is podcasting these days and (like me) filling in on the air for other broadcast hosts from time to time and Bubba the Love Sponge (Todd Clemm) who is a major Florida star and Todd Schnitt (aka MJ in the Morning on the Power Pig) and for whom I fill in from time to time. There was also a whole host of producers and production wizards with a mixed record of success. We were all trained and taught to do whatever it took – the more outrageous the better – to get ratings that were then transformed into advertising revenue. By way of example, at one point we even re-branded our stations (News Radio 970 WFLA) as NUDE Radio 970 WFLA, repainted one of our vans with that slogan and hired strippers to ride on the roof – buck-ass naked – in a community parade.
Most if not all of us other than Glenn and Bubba have since abandoned the shock element from our acts.
I flunked the “shock jock” course, was fired and went on to continue my journalistic career after retiring literally to the beach (Clearwater) for a year.

When Howard Stern bolted from broadcast radio to the obscurity of satalitte Glenn Beck became the last real shock jock standing, and a clean-cut version that you wouldn’t mind your daughter dating toboot.
It has always been part of Glenn’s act to make things up. Not entirely mind you, but make them up nonetheless while leaving just enough truth to be able to claim credibility. As you know he is an accomplished stand up commedian and that is also part of how a comic comes up with material… they take the truth, give it a twist and find a laugh.
Clear Channel was able to use the troops and support for them to build him a national radio following (hence their outright hostility toward my work with MAF and open support for the troops on my KFBK AM show in Sacramento). As you know they eventually fired me for that open support of the troops (and my support for the enforcement of anti-Human Trafficking laws). I was cutting into a corporate master plan and would not stop because I did (and do) not believe that those willing to lay down their lives for us are a prop to be used as a marketing tool, no matter how genuine Glenn’s feelings are (and they are genuine).
CNN mistook what Glenn does as “journalism” and his audience as supportive of him and not actually supportive of the troops. That led to his first real ratings disaster with Turner Broadcasting.
Fox on the other hand recognized that Glenn was a unique practitioner of a form of using news and issues as bread and circuses for the masses. They built him a show and staff that reflected that, gave him the creative freedom to fly or fail and he has flown like an eagle.
Stephen Colbert uses a flying eagle as his show’s symbol what could almost be an open parody of Glenn Beck’s act.
For those of you concerned about what Glenn Beck may or may not have said about me or attributed to me please rest assured that he is leaning back in his chair, grinning widely and saying to his staff about his viewers “Gotcha again”.
Repeat after me: The operative word in the phrase”‘Glenn Beck Show” is “‘Show”.

Every border teen goes through a right of passage that involves being in Mexico and either appearing or being drunk, stopped by the Federales and paying them the going rate to be sprung and sent along your way. Back in the day it was around 50-bucks, I have no idea what the bribe is today. But if you live in the forgotten Borough, Staten Island, you’d better bone up on the rules because the Mexican Police will now be patrolling the streets. Story here

“A top Tea Party leader who has publicly distanced his group from the GOP was recently paid by a campaign run by an influential California Republican business organization, to gather signatures for a ballot initiative that’s long been a key goal of the state party.
Mark Meckler, one of two national spokespeople for the Tea Party Patriots, was recently paid $7,500 for “petition circulation management” by the “Citizen Power Campaign Supported by the Lincoln Club of Orange County,” according tostate disclosure records. Meckler’s involvement with the campaign was first reported last month by the website Red County.
Yesterday, we reported that Meckler, a northern California lawyer, had also helped run a political consulting firm with ties to Washington D.C. Republicans.
The Lincoln Club, a group of southern California Republican businesspeople, is an influential player in state GOP circles. “The Club’s founders created an organization that included a wide spectrum of beliefs within the Republican Party,” it declares on its website. The group had a key role in the 1978 passage of the state’s anti-property tax ballot measure, and in the 2003 recall of Democratic governor Gray Davis.
The Club’s profile as a power center for business conservatives — according to its website, its membership “is comprised chiefly of entrepreneurs, CEOs, professionals, and executives from a wide spectrum of industries” — would appear to sit uneasily with the Tea Party’s more populist, anti-corporate ethos.
The Citizen Power Campaign is the Lincoln Club’s latest big-ticket project. It aims to gather enough signatures from voters to place a measure on the ballot this November which would make it illegal to use taxpayer money, deducted from the paychecks of public employees, for political activity. That would take away a key source of funding for the state’s public employees union, and make it more difficult for pro-labor candidates to get elected.
Passing the initiative, often known as “paycheck protection,” has long been a goal of the state GOP, and the effort was endorsed earlier this year by Senate candidate Carly Fiorina and gubernatorial hopeful Steve Poizner, among other California Republicans. Voters rejected paycheck protection initiatives in 1998 and 2005, both times by 53-47 margins.
Meckler’s involvement with the campaign — coming on the heels of yesterday’s news about his GOP-tied consulting firm — could intensify the fears of many grassroots Tea Partiers that their movement is being hijacked by Republican operatives. Meckler has gone out of his way recently to stress his independence from the GOP. “The major parties in this nation haven’t represented the American people,” he told TPMmuckrakerin an interview in January, and lamented to a recent interviewer: “I felt like the Republican Party didn’t represent my values. The political parties represent entrenched interests … and they never do what they say.”
Meckler reportedly sent out a recent email to friends and family asking for financial help.
Late Update: Meckler responds:
I did get paid for about two months with the Citizen Power Campaign, but the campaign didn’t have the money to continue paying me, so that was discontinued. Back to struggling to survive. It’s all good though. It’s a worthwhile fight, and I’m fighting on…paid or not…just a little less time to spend.
As for working with a GOP-tied group… we align with folks who share our values on particular projects and initiatives. In some places and times that will be folks who have ties to Republicans, past or present, sometimes it will be Young Republicans, 9/12 groups, libertarian organizations, Democratic committees and organizations, and many, many others. Unlike the political paradigms of the past, we’re not really interested in party labels. We’re interested in principles. Party labels are a great way to divide people, even when they agree in principle. We’re more interested in aligning with people and organizations that share our principles on particular issues. The principle here is that we believe that public employee union money has corrupted California’s politics to the point where the citizens no longer have any real power. With hundreds of millions of dollars per year to pour into the political system, the system is impossibly corrupted and controlled by the public employee unions. Until this is changed, California has no chance of climbing out of the fiscal cesspool into which it has descended. We align on this issue with people and organizations that believe that the public employee unions have too much money and power in our system, and are causing its downfall. I don’t care if those people are Republicans, Democrats, independents or however else they wish to label themselves. We’ll let others worry about the labels, and we’ll stay focused on principle. The principles are what will ultimately prevail, not the parties.”
